Background
The Village of Maywood has been working with Cook County, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) for many years to address flooding and combined sewer basement backups. The Village currently relies on combined sewers that collect rainwater runoff, sewage and wastewater in the same pipes. When the area experiences heavy rains, combined sewers quickly reach their capacity and become overwhelmed, which can result in basement flooding.
The Village is pleased to be receiving funding from a number of sources to address flooding issues in Phase 1 including:
The storm sewer project will be coordinated with IDOT's I-290 Improvements and allow for the Village to connect to IDOT's proposed storm sewer. As part of the I-290 improvements, IDOT will construct a large diameter (66") storm sewer with outfall to the Des Plaines River in future years. The drainage benefit will be realized at that time.
- Cook County Community Development Block Grant Disaster Relief (CDBG-DR) funding for 100% of the cost of preliminary engineering.
- $3.5 million in construction funding from the Cook County CDBG-DR program.
- $4.0 million in additional sewer separation construction funding (with no requirement for Village matching funds), through the MWRD's Stormwater Partnership Program.
